United States Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced that the Statue of Liberty in New York will re-open on the anniversary of the U.S. Independence Day July 4, 2013 which falls later.
"The storm has destroyed Sandy existing facilities around the Statue of Liberty. However, we have to fix it. Residents and tourists can go back to see the Statue of Liberty on Independence Day later," he said, as quoted from HuffingtonPost, Thursday (03/21/2013).
Sandy storm, which occurred in October 2012 and then, does not destroy the Statue of Liberty, Liberty Island but the ruin, where the statue stood. The storm destroyed the sidewalks and flooded the surrounding buildings. When a storm occurs, Liberty Island flooded by more than two meters.
The Statue of Liberty is one of the most popular tourist attractions in New York, United States. In 2011, there were 3.7 tourists visit the statue.
